Acupressure is considered an alternative medicine that focuses on pressure points located on the body. Similar to acupuncture, these points are also called meridians and are believed to follow invisible channels of vital energy flow.
There are 12 major meridians found on the body, used during acupressure, believed to connect with specific organs or network of organs. During treatment, physical pressure is applied to the pressure points to clear any blockages in the meridians.
According to this theory, when one of these meridians is blocked or out of balance, illness can occur. Acupressure and acupuncture are among the types of traditional Chinese medicine that are thought to help restore balance.
During an acupressure session, the practitioner presses on the specific acupressure points on the body. Often times, acupressure involves stretching or massage. For best results, several sessions are recommended. Some studies suggest acupressure therapy may help manage or provide temporary relief for nausea, lower back pain, stress and headaches.
