Massage licensing requirements

Licensing Requirements

In order to practice as a massage therapist, candidates must earn a license and/or certification in their specialty. Education and licensing credentials also validate and verify the knowledge and professionalism of a therapist.

Massage therapists must receive training from an accredited school. Licensing requirements vary by state. A membership in a professional association is a great complement to a résumé.

Most states provide strict requirements to regulate the massage therapy profession. Each state may differ with regard to the necessary license requirements and certifications. It’s also possible that cities and/or counties may have additional regulations or requirements.

Some massage therapists choose to earn a massage therapy license beyond the state level and receive a national certification. National certifications are provided by the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB).

In order to receive a national certification, candidates must meet educational, training and experience standards and pass the nationally certified exam provided by the NCBTMB. A national board certification is the highest voluntary credential attainable to massage therapists and bodywork professionals.

Most accredited schools require a minimum of 500 hours of in-class initial massage therapy training, which include the study of anatomy and physiology, the theory and practice of massage therapy and other elective subjects.
